I’d like to thank you all for your comments on my post about notions a few days ago. It is really helpful to hear about your experiences and tips. Also, I don’t know if you have noticed, but I tend to reply to comments on the same post, it’s easier for me and it all started because one day it didn’t work when I replied via email.  I used to get all those email back… So if you don’t get an email reply to your comments from me, don’t think I’m ignoring you, cause I don’t!

Now, I’m going to tell you about my new friend, an overlocker, yeepee!!!

A couple of days ago I had both my sewing machines serviced. One of them, my Brother (Innov-Is 350SE) , had to be fixed as the thread cutter was not retracting and was constantly catching the bobbin thread. For the last few weeks I had been using my “emergency” machine, the Janome (J3-18), which is great and I love it, even though I have to get used to it since I’m a bit spoiled with the Brother’s extra features.

I’m really lucky to know the best mechanic in the west of Ireland! He’ll come to your house and repair/service your machine. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere like me! (Mind you, he also lives in the middle of the other nowhere) He’s such a lovely man and so helpful. I happened to ask him about overlockers and told him that I’m on the look out for a second hand one, nothing fancy really, just enough to have nice finished hems… Well, he went out to get a tool from his van and he came back with it plus an old Baby Lock overlocker too. I was playing with it while he was working on the other two machines. He showed me how to use it, just the basics. I heard how frustrating it is to thread an overlocker but this one was not that bad (although I’ll see how I get on on my own…). I went online, while he kept working, to see if I could get a manual for it, as it didn’t come with one when he got it. From all the listed models in different sites, I couldn’t see one for this model.

It stitched nicely, smoothly and looked very sturdy. I liked it and I bought it for €70. He gave me 10 needles and it came with the 4 cones for bigger spools. I think it was a good price considering the price for new ones. I did a quick search while he was still there and found out it is advisable that if you get an old Baby Lock you: a. should seek for a Japanese make as opposed to Taiwanese or Korean (Bingo! mine is… ), b. that ideally you want it to use needle style DC x 1F (bingo again!) and c. you should stay away from models BL202, 302, 402. Well, I don’t know if it’s a Bingo, maybe it is because it didn’t mention mine which is BL4-543, but I don’t seem to find any more information about it on the internet!!!

I would like to ask you for a bit of help… if possible. I’ve been trying to find a manual for this model and it look like it is not listed in any of the sites where they sell old manuals. Maybe there is somebody reading this post, who happen to have an old Baby Lock BL4-543 or maybe have a friend, or a neighbour or an aunt or somebody who may have one… and maaaaaaybe also have a manual for it… I would appreciated it so much if I could have a copy, and if I had more information about the machine itself, how old it is, etc… My mechanic didn’t know it either…

I  found something that lead me towards a possible manual, but it ended up a bit frustrating. On one of my Google searches I came across this Newzealander  forum where one of the members happens to have a copy of the manual. I tried to register so I could contact her, but the registration form is pretty daunting. It kept asking me for security questions to prove you are human. And what was the question?

“what programe is on after the TV3 news during weekdays?”

Right. I’m in a New Zealand site, so I take it they mean TV3 channel from New Zealand. I Google their TV guide and find out that the program after the news during the week is “Home and Away”. Great! Type it in. Nope, not  great. Wrong answer. Oh, they must have “seen” my IP is Irish, so the question might be related to the Irish TV3 channel… ? Again, I Google the TV guide and the program  is “Xposé”. Nope, wrong again.

This is worse than Trivial Pursuit! All I’m looking for is a bloody manual for my overlocker!!!

but by the third attempt they changed the question: who is the leader of the opposition?

So… I chanced it and thought they meant in New Zealand and Wikipedia told me it’s David Shearer. At last! they accepted it, but I’m still waiting for the administrator to accept me. Then I’ll probably be able to contact the lady in question, although I’m not sure if she’ll answer since that last message 2 years old.

Then I found this site where they have a vast list of manuals for machines but unfortunately they don’t have one for my model. I emailed them and I’m also waiting for a response. Fingers crossed!

So this is my new adventure at the moment, I still haven’t got much time to play with it, between work and family there isn’t much time left, but oh, it looks so nice!I’m so happy I’ve waited until the right time made it fall into my hands. So, in the meantime, while I’m waiting for any response, I’d love to hear from any of you, maybe if you have some information about this Baby Lock…?

Thank you!

An Etsy Giveaway: Nurananu

Well here’s the first post about Etsy and its sellers!

I have the pleasure to introduce you Nuria from NURANANU!

nuria

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF…

Hi! My name is Nuria and I have a little shop in Etsy which, for those who don’t know about it, it is one of the biggest handmade and vintage on-line marketplace.

I fell in love with Etsy and its philosophy on new commerce from the very beginning. Soon after getting to know it, I tried to summarise all the things I found appealing about it in this post which I first published in Unadocenade.com, From there, and to my surprise, it was widely spread through Facebook and Twitter.

I realised then, that I was not the only one falling in love with this way of doing. I realised there is a bunch of people out there who, fed up with some weird side effects of globalization, are also looking for fairer ways of commerce. Because… let’s be honest, does any of you think that what we pay for our clothes in certain clothes store chains is really paying the makers’ work? I don’t think so. But still we will complain about the buttons falling off after a few days… Although we are not paying for quality, we expect it! We have lost sight of the cost of material and workforce. It is very sad but news like this one are not surprising to us anymore. We just close our eyes and keep buying!

My struggle at home: Children do not need the million clothes they own. They do not know what to wear if there is so much anyway. We can spend the money in less things of better quality.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO OPEN YOUR OWN ETSY SHOP?

I decided to open a shop on Etsy, first of all, to keep my sanity after becoming mum for a second time. Also to keep me mentally updated and understand how e-commerce works, to avoid making a “poker face” when the young ones talk about social media, to avoid become a dinosaur, really. I did it in order to understand the changes that occur in the world around me (and my children). It’s a kind of fight against my personal obsolescence.

Not to mention the fact that this little project brought together all the things I always liked: design, crafting, photography photo edition, writting, getting to know people, inventing logos, learning new stuff… It all started like a little game to fill my spare time with something creative. Slowly, I found myself looking for more time to complete my self-imposed tasks and now I consider bringing it to the next level trying to get a little income out of it.

WHAT ADVISE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING OF OPENING AN ETSY SHOP?

If you are considering opening a shop in Etsy I would recommend you to investigate inside the platform. You will find everything there as well as in Etsy’s blog, and whatever you can’t find you could ask in your team threads, where you will find plenty of people willing to help you.

CAN YOU NAME 2 ETSY SHOPS THAT YOU LOVE?

There are plenty of lovely shops! You can find just anything! Since I have to choose only two of them I will pick two of my own “field”, as they also work with needles and yarn.

The first one: Knitbranda, owned by sisters Paula and Mariana from Buenos Aires. When I grow up I want to be like them. They have an amazing shop. All of their articles are ordered like a colour chart, which produces in me the same fascination you get when you open a brand new colour pencil box. You can almost feel the smell of the wood. They are not only efficient but also extremely friendly, fun and helpful. I have to publicly mention it here, otherwise there wouldn’t be a way for me to thank them enough for all their good advise. 🙂

The second one I want to tell you about is Thesummerhouseshop owned by Zaida Martín. She is just starting with extremely delicate articles and an impeccable photography. I met her in an Etsy gathering. Zaida emanates the same sensitivity as her work. It was a pleasure to meet her and plenty of good omens, with no doubt.

WHAT ETSY SHOPS HAVE YOU PURCHASED FROM?

This was my first shopping in Etsy. It was a kind of trial to see how the transaction worked. I loved it from the first moment! It is a printing of a painting by Tali, an israeli artist who has a beautiful shop called Tushtush.

I have also bought supplies on Etsy for my own crafts, but one of the purchase I have made that I remember with fondness is three pins (little red ridding hood, wolf and a dragon) by Teresa Sánchez from Ovejitabe.

Hola!

I DUES BOTIGUES ON HI HAS COMPRAT?

About notions, useful or useless?

How often do you buy notions? Are there any that you’ve bought thinking  they would be very useful and you still haven’t used? I often wonder how essential some notions and sewing gadgets are… I suppose it depends on what you do more, if it’s quilting or garment making, embroidery, etc…

I started making patchwork with almost nothing. Just my mum’s sewing basket. Scissors, thread, pins and needles. I never used a thimble for hand sewing because it bothered me and it got in the way. I couldn’t hold the needle properly with it. (Now I always use it). I remember designing a pattern on graph paper, cutting the templates, using a pencil to trace them onto the fabric and hand sewing the pieces because I wouldn’t have a clue how to use a sewing machine.

Now I love my cutting mat, rotary cutter and ruler and my sewing machine (or machines I should say, about which I’ll dedicate another post). I don’t think I would even attempt to make any big patchwork project without them. Well, I would if there wasn’t really anything else. I’d say it’s like when you get a dishwasher for the first time. Once you have the dishwasher, it’s kind of hard to go back without one…You’ll wash the odd plate, that’s all.

******

*****

Over time, I have bought a few other bits and bobs. There is one tool I have been taking for granted and because I’ve become more interested in garment making, I realised I hadn’t paid  attention to it. I now own a REALLY GOOD pair of dressmaker scissors like these ones:

scissors

I also love my shear scissors and embroidery ones too. I think investing in good scissors is really important, no matter whether  you are only into patchwork or a more varied sewing life. My good scissors ONLY live in my sewing room, they’re not allowed to leave the room or be used for anything else.  You don’t want to know the amount of scissors that have been kidnapped and never worked properly when I saw them again. Sigh. Something tells me I’m not alone here…

**

Ara nomes viuen a l’habitacio de cosir i no surten d’alla per a res.

**

I do have a little thingy that I still haven’t used, just because I’m so used to not using it that I actually wonder is it any use at all!

bias

A bias tape maker. It’s still in the box… I should try it some of these days. Do you have one? Is it worth having? Is it easy to use? And this other thingy below…

**

Vaig interntar fer-lo servir i no me’n vaig sortir. Viu al calaix. Ja ho intentare un altre dia…

**

feet

A bias binder foot. Tried to use it. Failed. Lives in the drawer. Maybe I should give it another go…

Now, as I said,  I spend a fair amount of time making clothes and I’ve even taken up some alterations recently (that’s what happen when your neighbours and friends know that you have a sewing machine… but I like the challenge and I’m learning a lot at the same time, and they know I’m not a professional and that I do me besht)

so… in the dressmaking area…

I love my sewing gauge! So much better than using a measuring tape which I kept doing for ages…

***

***

gauge

and my pattern tracing wheel

tracing wheel

A few weeks ago I bought 2 things that I’m very happy with and would recommend:

needle sharp

A needle sharpening pad. You can use it for your machine needles, hand sewing needles or pins. It’s great!

And another sharpening tool:

cutter

A rotary blade sharpener, after reading some reviews like this one, I decided to purchase it. I sharpened 2 old blades and I’m so happy with the result. I know I’ll save a lot of money…

There are 2 things on my wish list: I desperately need a new self-healing cutting mat which I hope to get soon. The other one will probably take a while to get… I’d love to have a dressmaker’s mannequin. I’m still deciding what would suit me best since I’m a beginner. Should I get an adjustable one or one that is my size? I’ve got a very tight budget, so I still don’t know what to do, but I’m tempted by this

mannequin

Have any of you got one? which one would you recommend?

So, after all my ranting, what is your experience with notions? Are there many that you find useless? which ones? Any good found that opened your eyes? what is it?

Etsy Goodness and some giveaways

Screen Shot 2013-04-11 at 08.50.44

A while ago I bumped into Nura Nanu‘s and thought it was a very interesting blog. Nuria and I have a few things in common, we’re both Catalan, living abroad, we’re mums, we blog, we work, we create and we have an Etsy shop!

I read a post she wrote about Etsy shopping and I couldn’t agree more on the 12 reasons she gives to buy handmade items on Etsy:

1. You open a door to creativity and uniqueness.

2. You support to establish a new model of economy.

3. You get personalised and one of a kind items.

4. Really good value at affordable prices.

5. You support individuals and not big corporations.

6. You deal directly with the crafter.

7. You become part of a community.

8. It’s easy and fun.

9. You get unique gifts.

10. Supporting human rights, say no to sweatshops!

11. Eco-friendly, as most of the big companies do not respect the environment.

12. You get good quality items, as nobody was forced to rush while making your item…

Aren’t these good reasons to support handmade?

Do you know about Etsy?

Have you ever bought anything on Etsy?

Do you have an Etsy shop yourself?

I would like to spread the word about Etsy and its sellers. That’s why every so often I’m going to invite an Etsy seller here to my blog so they can introduce themselves, talk about what they do and maybe share a tutorial, some tips and other things. Oh… and they’ll offer a giveaway too!

Don’t forget to pop in soon to meet Nuria from Nura Nanu and enter the chance to win her fabulous giveaway!

*********************************

There’s a few questions I need to answer and then I need to pass this award on to 11 other bloggers that have less than 200 followers. They will have to do the same if they accept this award. I find it difficult to choose only 11 though… These are the questions I have to answer to Mandy:

5. What’s your favorite journey? / Quin es el teu trajecte preterit?

You are supposed to pass this award to 11 more bloggers who have less than 200 followers by writing a post, answering these questions and listing the blogs you’ve chosen. Write a list of questions for them to answer and ask them to pass the award on. This will help to spread the word about these lovely blogs!
